Final Grade Calculator
Finals week math shouldn't be harder than the final itself. This calculator answers the question every student asks in December and May: what do I need on my final to get the grade I want? Enter your current grade, your target grade, and how much the final is worth — you'll see the exact score you need in real time.
One tool, six modes: plan before the exam ("what do I need?"), check after the exam ("what did I get?"), handle multipart finals, points-based classes, dropped-lowest grading, and full weighted gradebooks.
Does your final have several parts (e.g. multiple choice + essay)? Enter each part, then your course info below.
Is your class graded by total points instead of percentages? Enter your points so far.
Enter each category's weight and your score in it. Leave a score blank if it's not graded yet.
How the math works
Your course grade is a weighted average. Every graded item contributes its score times its weight. Working backwards from the grade you want uses one rearranged formula: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal. That's the exact calculation running above — no rounding tricks, no guesses.
A worked example
Say you have an 85% going into a final worth 30% of your grade. To keep an 85%: (85 − 85 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 85% — you have to hold serve. To reach an 88%: (88 − 59.5) ÷ 0.3 = 95% needed. And to reach 90%? (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.3 = 101.7% — mathematically out of reach, better to know now. One formula, three very different study plans. Knowing the real number, not the anxiety, is the whole point.
Which mode should I use?
Most students want the first tab: What do I need on my final? If your class is graded in total points (e.g. "412 out of 500 so far"), use Points-based class. Two quarters plus a final? Categories & weights (or our semester grade calculator). Teacher drops your lowest quiz? Drop lowest scores.
Frequently Asked Questions
What grade do I need on my final to keep an A?
It depends on two things: your current grade and how much the final is worth. Plug both into the first tab above. Example: with a 91% current grade and a final worth 20%, you need (90 − 91 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 86% to finish with a 90% A−.
Is a 90 an A or A−?
At most schools a 90–92.9% is an A− and 93%+ is an A, but grading scales vary — some schools count 90+ as a flat A. Check your syllabus. This calculator shows the common ± scale alongside your percentage.
My final is worth 10%. Can it really change my grade?
Less than you fear. A 10% final can move your grade by at most a few points: if you have an 88, even a 100 on the final only gets you to 89.2%. Use the calculator to see your realistic best and worst case — it's usually a narrower band than finals anxiety suggests.
What if the final is optional or can replace a lower test score?
Use the Grade after final tab to game out scenarios: enter your current grade, the score you expect, and the weight. For "replace lowest" policies, use Drop lowest scores to see your average with the low score removed first.
Does this work for college and high school?
Yes — weighted grading works the same way everywhere. College classes sometimes weight the final at 25–40% or more, which is exactly when knowing your target score matters most.
