When a final is worth 40%, one exam overshadows months of work: an 85% going in can finish anywhere from 51% to 91%. That cuts both ways — a strong final is the single biggest grade lever you have, which is exactly why knowing your target score (not a vague hope) changes how finals week goes.

What GPA damage can a failed final do?
It depends on the weight and your cushion: with an 85% going in, a 50 on a 30% final lands you at 85×0.7 + 50×0.3 = 74.5% (C) — a 10.5-point drop. Run your real numbers above before assuming the worst; if you're borderline, tell your professor early — some have minimum-final-score policies.
