Semester Grade Calculator
Most schools calculate your semester grade as Quarter 1 + Quarter 2 + a semester final, weighted something like 40% + 40% + 20%. This calculator combines them — leave the final blank to see where you stand right now, or enter a target grade to see the exact final exam score you need.
Adjust the weights to match your syllabus; the default 40/40/20 is the most common setup.
Example: what do I need on my final?
Q1: 88%, Q2: 91%, final worth 20%, and you want a 90% for the semester. Your pre-final standing is (88×40 + 91×40) ÷ 80 = 89.5%. Needed on the final: (90 − 89.5×0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 92%. That's the number to study for.
Why quarters don't average the way you think
If Q1 and Q2 have equal 40% weights, they do average normally — but the final's weight is what changes everything. A bad quarter can be rescued by a strong final and vice versa. Run your real numbers above instead of guessing; the difference between "I think I have a B" and "I have an 89.5% going in" is real study strategy.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a semester grade calculated?
Each component is multiplied by its weight and summed: semester grade = Q1×0.40 + Q2×0.40 + Final×0.20 in the most common setup. Weights vary by school (37.5/37.5/25 is another common one) — set yours in the calculator above.
What if my final isn't graded yet?
Leave the final exam field blank. The calculator shows your semester grade based on completed quarters only, weighted exactly as your school will count them.
Can my final exam lower my grade?
Yes — the final counts toward the semester grade just like the quarters do. If you're at 89.5% going into a 20% final, scoring below 87.5% would pull you under 90%. Use the target field above to see your exact cushion.
Does a semester grade replace my quarter grades?
No — quarters typically stay on your transcript as quarter grades, and the semester grade is the one that earns credits and appears on your final transcript. That's exactly why the semester calculation matters most.
