Worked weighted example
Homework 95 (weight 20), Quizzes 88 (30), Midterm 84 (20), Final not yet (30). Current weighted grade = (95×20 + 88×30 + 84×20) ÷ 70 = 89.3% — computed over the 70% of the course graded so far. That's the honest pre-final number.
The mistake most students make
Averaging category scores without weights ("95, 88, 84 average to 89") overweights light categories and underweights heavy ones. In the example above, the true weighted current grade is 89.3 — close here, but with lopsided weights (Homework 10%, Tests 60%) the gap can be several letter grades.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a grade with weighted categories?
Score × weight for each category, then sum. If weights don't total 100% (say 70% is graded so far), the calculator renormalizes automatically so you see your true current standing.
What if the weights don't add up to 100?
That's normal mid-semester — it just means part of the course isn't graded yet. The calculator divides by the weight graded so far. When everything's in, weights will total 100 and the result is your final grade.
How do I know my category weights?
Your syllabus states them on day one. If you've lost it, ask your teacher — grading schemes are public information, and knowing them is the difference between steering your grade and guessing at it.
Do teachers weight the final into the total automatically?
If the final is a category with a weight, yes — enter it like any other category once you have the score. Leave it blank before the exam and the other categories renormalize to show your pre-final standing.
